Franz Ferdinand lit up Portland’s McMenamins Crystal Ballroom this past Sunday as part of 94/7’s “A December to Remember” concert series. Sponsored by the beloved local radio station, the show was a highlight of the holiday music calendar, drawing a packed crowd eager to experience the band’s signature energy and infectious sound.

The evening kicked off with “Bar Lonely,” a new track from the band’s upcoming album, The Human Fear, instantly setting the tone for a night of pulsating beats and sing-along anthems. The band’s setlist was a carefully curated blend of classics and newer tracks, ensuring something for fans of every era. Early highlights included “Love Illumination” and “The Dark of the Matinée,” both of which had the iconic floating dance floor of the Crystal Ballroom alive with movement.

Frontman Alex Kapranos was a commanding presence, engaging the crowd with his effortless charisma and dynamic vocals. The chemistry among the band members was palpable, their tight instrumentation keeping the energy levels high. Midway through the set, the reflective “Walk Away” provided a brief moment of calm before the night surged forward with the exhilarating “Take Me Out.” This quintessential Franz Ferdinand hit amped up the crowd, with the audience singing every word in a euphoric crescendo.

The encore was a treat for fans, featuring gems like the latest single “Audacious” and “Outsiders.” The night ended on a blazing note with “This Fire,” the perfect closer that left the audience buzzing as they spilled out into the cold December night.

Part of a longstanding Portland tradition, this “A December to Remember” performance was a masterclass in live music, proving once again why Franz Ferdinand remains one of the most underrated bands to see live. It was an unforgettable evening that perfectly blended holiday cheer with pure rock-and-roll adrenaline.
